Wands Wands are so important to Wizards. They are part of the things that define them from Muggles. Without their wand they wouldn't be able to do any complex spells, charms, jinxes or anything. The wand makes a wizard who he is. Perhaps this is why the wand chooses the wizard. It picks a similar wand to the person's character. Wands are made as far as we know by two people, Mr. Ollivander and Gregorovich. The latter we don't know a lot about but we do know he makes good wands but they are very unorthodox. Mr. Ollivander resides in Diagon Alley in London, and makes all the wands himself. Ollivander has been making wands since 382 BC which as I am sure you will agree is a very long time. Mr. Ollivander actually goes and gets all the things needed to make the wands himself which is a very dangerous task, especially having to go and get things from unicorns and dragons. He has a special tape measure that he uses when measuring people for their wands and this only seems to obey to his command. Maybe this helps him select certain wands. For instance, a wand seems to be relevant to a person's height. Hagrid has a very long wand and is very tall wheras Fleur Delacour had a small wand and she is quite petite. A wand is made up of 4 characteristics:
There are different types of wood that can be used to make wands:
The cores used in wands are:
Brother wands are also another issue we must mention, as we have seen from the graveyard chapter in GoF. When two brother wands are forced to duel with each other then something called Priori Incantatem (the reverse spell effect) will take place. This effect causes one of the wands to regurgitate spells it has done in the past causing ghost-like echos to come out of the wand in the order that they have last been preformed. |
