The Burrow The Burrow, home of the Weasley family, is a towering, crooked cottage just outside the village of Ottery St. Catchpole (in Devon, England). It is several stories high, with four or five chimneys, and is most likely held up by magic (indeed, it is magically concealed from the Muggles in the village nearby). The entrance to the house is announced by a lopsided sign, and surrounded by a jumble of Wellington boots and several chickens who live in the front yard. The garden out the back is full of overgrown grass and weeds, overflowing with plants (most likely of the magical variety), and surrounded by gnarled trees, with a large pond. It is infested with gnomes. Nearby there is a small paddock, also owned by the Weasleys, which is surrounded by trees. As it is surrounded by trees, the Weasley children can use this paddock to play Quidditch as long as they don't fly too high. Upon entering the Burrow, one comes into the kitchen. Rather small and cramped, it contains a scrubbed wooden table and chairs, a fireplace with cooking books stacked on the mantelpiece, and a magical clock with no numbers (instead bearing messages such as "You're late" and "Time to feed the chickens"). The Weasley family usually eat their meals here; however, during the summer of 1994 there were eleven people staying at the Burrow in preparation for the Quidditch World Cup. The kitchen was not large enough to contain this many people, and instead they ate outside in the garden. The Burrow contains a narrow, crooked staircase, making its way to the top of the house. On the second floor is a (presumably vacant) bedroom which previously belonged to Percy Weasley before he became estranged from his family and moved out in 1995. While Percy still lived at The Burrow, he spent most of his time in his bedroom, writing letters to his girlfriend - and later, working on reports for his job at the Ministry of Magic. This room has a window which opens out onto the garden, and which was occasionally used by Percy for the purpose of leaning out and yelling at his siblings. Also on the second floor is the bedroom of Fred and George Weasley. When the twins lived in the Burrow, it was not considered at all unusual to hear explosions coming from their room, as they used it mainly for the purpose of inventing magical joke items for their growing business, Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes. Even after Fred and George moved out of the Burrow and into the small flat above their shop in Diagon Alley in the summer of 1996, they left boxes full of unfinished joke products in their bedroom. Hermione went fiddling through these boxes and managed get a black eye when a telescope she was clutching punched her. Opening onto the third landing is the bedroom of Ginny Weasley. It is in this room that Hermione Granger stays when she visits The Burrow. Other than that, little is known about this room other than the fact that Ginny, during the period in which she fancied Harry, used to peek out the door to watch him pass during his visits. On the fifth landing, the top floor of the house excluding the attic (in which resides a rather noisy ghoul), is Ron Weasley's bedroom. This is the bedroom in which Harry sleeps during his visits. There is a small plaque on the door reading "Ronald's Room", and the walls and ceiling are covered in posters of his favourite Quidditch team, the Chudley Cannons. Even Ron's bedspread is emblazoned with the Cannons' logo. As a result, the room appears to be a lurid shade of orange upon first glance (orange and black being the team colours). The room also contains a tank of frogspawn, Ron's extensive collection of "Martin Miggs, The Mad Muggle" comic books, and various other magical items. There is a small window overlooking the field behind the garden. The exact location in the house of the bedroom of Arthur and Molly Weasley has yet to be revealed. Outside The Burrow, toward the front side of the house, is Arthur Weasley's shed. This is filled with various Muggle paraphernalia, due to his obsession with the Muggle world. Arthur's favourite hobby is dismantling these items to see how they work, and sometimes enchanting them. It previously contained a Ford Anglia (which has also been taken apart and enchanted by Mr. Weasley); however, the car has since gone wild and (to the best of anyone's knowledge) currently resides in the Forbidden Forest at Hogwarts. Also on the Weasley property is the small broom shed in which the various Weasley children store their brooms. During the summer of 1996, when Harry came to the Burrow, he was moved into Fred and George's old room. Harry was not the only addition to the Burrow that summer. Hermione Granger, like Harry, decided to spend her summer holidays with the Weasleys and go to Hogwarts from there. In addition, Fleur Delacour also moved into the Burrow that summer at the prompting of her fiancé, Bill Weasley. He thought it would be a good idea for her to get to know his family better, although not all of the members of his family agreed. Also that summer, Mrs. Weasley took to carrying her magical clock around the house with her. She wanted to keep a watch on it, although all nine hands, one for each of the nine Weasleys, pointed continually to "mortal peril" since Lord Voldemort had begun operating in the open again |
